Bayern Munich head coach Vincent Kompany seems poised and ready to face Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League.
In the lead up to the match, Kompany was asked about Bayern Munich’s propensity for giving up goals. Specifically, Kompany was asked if goal concessions are just part of doing business with the team’s attacking style.
“The mission is to win games. We have ideas that we think help us to do that. It’s just about that. We’ve shown that we can win many games, PSG have shown that too. In
the end, you have to score one more goal than your opponent to win a game. If you can do it without conceding, that’s the best thing that could happen,” Kompany said (as captured by @iMiaSanMia).
Kompany noted that there is a special feeling around town this week in the lead up to the highly-anticipated game.
“Yes. There’s a good relationship between this team and the fans. At the start of the season, maybe not many believed we’d still have a chance to reach the final — but now we’re here, we’ve experienced many special moments. And I think the fans believe we can do it. We want to make it a memorable moment,” Kompany said.
While his team does not expect to change much, Kompany said there is a chance things could look different in the second leg.
“It always depends on the teams. If one decides to take a step back and defend more, then there could be some calmer phases in the game. Otherwise there won’t. It’s difficult to imagine that either team will change what brought them here in the first place. We’re playing at home, we want to win and will do everything for that,” Kompany said.
Should the game come down to penalties, Kompany says his squad will be prepared.
“Of course we have a list and an order of penalty takers. But we won’t make any player take a penalty if he doesn’t want to or doesn’t feel well. But this was already a topic of discussion three months ago before the DFB -Pokal games. It’s part of every training session in the second half of the season, and therefore won’t be spontaneous tomorrow if we got there,” said Kompany.
Finally, Kompany hit on the team’s injury situation, which has improved in recent days and if he would be able to sleep on Tuesday night ahead of the big match.
“Serge is out. All others are there and available. That’s important and a big difference to last season, where we were very unlucky with injuries,” Kompany stated. “I’ll have no difficulty to find sleep. I don’t even feel the pressure of the game so far. I do my work and sleep without issue.”
