Week 6 in Liga Femenil BBVA has passed and the positions in both groups keep changing, except for Club América and Tigres, that is.
Actually, both teams are set for a big clash next Sunday. Both come to this game unbeaten and at the top of the table in their groups.
Here’s everything you need to know from this ahead of week 7:
Derbies and results
In the Clásico Tapatío, Chivas destroyed Atlas 4-0. The goals were scored by Jasmine Casárez, Denise Castro, and a brace by Licha Cervantes and the three points moves them to
2nd in Group B along with Atlético de San Luis and Group A’s Juárez (12 points each).
Despite the early scare when Pumas scored in the first half through Stephanie Ribeiro, Brazilian international Geyse Ferreira made all the difference again and scored the brace that turned the tables, granting Club América all three points. With that win, the Eagles are perfect with six wins in six games.
Speaking of another team with a perfect score, Tigres dominated the game against Santos, winning 3-0. Maricarmen Reyes scored one of the fastest goals in Liga Femenil BBVA’s history, only 19 seconds into the match. María Sánchez scored another in the 59th minute, and Alison González also put one in the back of the net in stoppage time.
And speaking of Tigres, they had a week full of news, good and bad. On the bad side, the club announced that centreback Greta Espinoza tore her ACL and sprained her right knee’s lateral collateral ligament. This is a huge blow not only for the club as they are losing one of the captains and a very reliable defender – a pivotal piece for them, but also for the Mexican national team who will now look to qualify for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup without her.
On the other hand, the club has signed Talia Coury, a U-23 defender for Mexico who played at the college level in the US. Additionally, Venezuelan international Deyna Castellanos also signed with Tigres following the mutual agreement termination of her contract with the Portland Thorns.
Toluca was severely beaten by Rayadas de Monterrey, with a 1-5 result. Aerial Chavarín opened the tab for the Regias and scored a brace later in the match. Jermaine Seoposenwe also scored a brace, and Diana Gacía also found the back of the net. Maybe the addition of Danish international Katrine Veje to Toluca can help the midfield make a compact team that isn’t so easy to break.
Amandine Henry pulled one back for Diablas but, of course, it wasn’t enough. The season has progressively deteriorated for Toluca, a team that has lost some of its tenacity since Alberto Toril took over. Moreover, striker Eugénie Le Sommer hasn’t been the same since the start of the season.
Club América and Scarlett Camberos
The Ballon d’Or nominations pleasantly surprised many when Club América was included among the Team of the Year nominees.
They share this category with FC Barcelona, Bayern Munich, Manchester City and OL Lyonnes. The Mexican club’s candidacy came after they won a treble that included the league, the Champions of Champions (Clausura tournament champions vs Apertura tournament champion), and the Concacaf W Champions Cup.
But not only the team was nominated but also its captain, Scarlett Camberos. After leading the Eagles to the treble, she was chosen as the Best Player in the Continental Championship after finishing as top goalscorer in the competition.
Elsewhere in the league…
Necaxa hosted Atlético de San Luis and lost 0-2, sinking the Centellas even deeper with zero points so far in this tournament.
Pachuca are struggling to find its footing this season after their second loss in the last two games, with the latest being against Tijuana (1-3). The standards for this club are high but the team is not living up to them so far. Their record is 2-3-1, which positions them 5th in the table with only 7 points.
Cruz Azul won their match against Querétaro. With that win, it’s 3-3-0 for them. Ahead of Week 7, they’re positioned 6th in Group A with nine points.
Juárez hit the road to visit Atlante and got the three points thanks to the lone goal scored by Miah Zuazua in stoppage time.
The match between León and Puebla was a goalfest, with La Fiera winning by 5-2. Who scored? Nayely Bolaños scored a brace, while Rubí Soto, Itzell Alemán and Fer Pinilla each tallied one goal. For Puebla, Brina Micheels and Abigail Martínez put their names on the scoresheet as well.
