Bayern Munich midfielder Leon Goretzka played 90+ minutes for Bayern in their 2-1 win over VfB Stuttgart in the Franz Beckenbauer Super Cup. Just a year ago, Goretzka was subjected to many transfer rumors and was basically told that he was no longer part of the team’s plans going forward. However, Goretzka fought his way back over the rest of the last season and earned his starting spot back.
When asked about overcoming the difficulties of the last year and half, he had this to say, “I know what I’m
capable of. I went through some tough times, which is part of football. But I had people by my side helping me. I worked hard, showed resilience and always had a clear goal in mind.”
To see Goretzka back consistently in the starting eleven has been good to see — both for him and for the club. Although his performance was not especially amazing today, he was constantly there when he needed to be, created chances, and helped clear out dangerous situations. Though nothing will show up on the score sheet, Goretzka helped Bayern succeed today.
