On a Wednesday night in Frankfurt filled with positive signs as a Liverpool side that had struggled to start the 2025-26 season—and especially struggled over the past four games, all of which had ended
in defeat—one of the best was watching left back Andy Robertson dominating his flank both on and off the ball.
One of Liverpool’s longest-serving players, Robertson’s role this season has been diminished by the signing of Milos Kerkez. His newer, younger competition has struggled to live up to the past standards set by Robertson, though, and Wednesday was a reminder of just what the 31-year-old Scot can bring to the side.
“When you’re on a bit of a losing streak, which we were, it’s important to try to get the win come what may,” he reflected following Liverpool’s 5-1 victory. “But we got the performance as well. That was the manager’s message before the game: focus on the performance, focus on doing things right, and the result will come.
“I think we did that. Obviously we fell behind, but I thought the reaction was really good—which maybe a lot of teams can’t do after four defeats in a row. But I thought the reaction was great, we got our noses back in front and then never looked back, and second half we were really controlled, played really good stuff.”
The short turnaround to a late Saturday kickoff against Brentford in the Premier League means there isn’t much time to rest and recover—but fitness issues aside, there will be raised eyebrows if the lineup against Brentford on the weekend doesn’t look as close as possible to the one that played the second half last night.
“It’s all about recovering now with such a short turnaround,” Robertson added. “Brentford away has always been a difficult game and such a difficult team to play against, so we’re all going to really need to be at it. It’s important we rest, recover but our full focus is already on Brentford and we’ll start preparing for that.”
