Former Newcastle United manager Eddie Howe has been without job since stepping down from the Magpies in a shocking way midway through the preseason, bringing an end to a tenure in which he took the club from a relegation battle to European contention and its first domestic triumph in ages.
On Thursday, Indy Kaila reported that Howe would be open to an approach from Manchester United if the Red Devils decide to fire Michael Carrick after a midling start to the season. The report claimed United’s hierarchy
is prepared to make a managerial change if its poor run of results continues.
“Manchester United prepared to act if poor form continues; Eddie Howe understood to be open to approach,” Kaila reported on X.
For now, Carrick remains in charge at Old Trafford, meaning there is no vacancy at present for Howe to fill, but the report claimed Manchester United’s owners are becoming increasingly impatient following an unconvincing start to the season and the early domestic cup struggles.
According to the report, Howe would be more than willing to listen if Manchester United formally makes contact with the unemployed manager.
“Manchester United’s owners are prepared to make an immediate change in the dugout should the club’s current form persist, according to sources,” the report says. “It is understood that Newcastle United manager Eddie Howe would be willing to take charge at Old Trafford if formally approached.”
That would put the former Newcastle head coach back into Premier League management only a few months after leaving St James’ Park, and place him back in the brightest stage with the Red Devils competing in the Champions League this season.
Howe took over Newcastle in late 2021 when the club was fighting near the bottom of the table and subsequently established the team as a regular contender for European qualification. His departure this summer opened the door for Matthias Jaissle, who has since begun reshaping Newcastle around a significantly altered squad following several high-profile exits and arrivals.
