After C.J. Gardner-Johnson suffered a calf strain last week at Buffalo Bills training camp, everyone thought he’d be sidelined for weeks.
That proved not to be the case, as the chippy, high-energy veteran safety returned to the practice field at St. John Fisher University on Thursday for the team’s sixth training camp practice, surprising the masses as a full participant.
Many of Gardner-Johnson’s teammates raved about the play, attitude, and charisma he’s demonstrated in the first week of training
camp.
Dion Dawkins even detailed his rapidly formed bond with the safety on and off the field, referencing Gardner-Johnson as the teammate he didn’t know he needed.
Though Gardner-Johnson is only playing on a one-year prove it deal worth a maximum of $6 million, on the field he can provide much-needed stability at the other safety position opposite Cole Bishop. That stability has frankly been nonexistent after the golden years of Micah Hyde and Jordan Poyer at safety for the Bills.
While Buffalo marks his sixth stop in the NFL after being selected by the Saints in the fourth round of the 2019 NFL Draft, Gardner-Johnson has proven to be a game-changing defensive back in all facets of playing the position.
He’s had a pair of six-interception seasons — in 2022 and 2024 with the Eagles — and has six years with seven or more pass breakups as a professional.
Known for his pesky on-field attitude and penchant for trash talking, Gardner-Johnson also brings an “edge” Bills GM Brandon Beane has repeatedly mentioned as something he and his staff prioritized in many acquisitions this offseason.
In college at Florida, Gardner-Johnson played plenty of nickel corner along with his regular duties safety. Last year in Chicago, he played more nickel than any other spot on the field. In 2024, when Garnder-Johnson won the Super Bowl with the Eagles, he played 805 of his 1,170 snaps at free safety — this 28 year old epitomizes versatility in the secondary.
From many fearing he’d be lost for the season at the outset of his injury during the first week of training camp to back on the field less than a week later is enormously encouraging for the Bills as he’s learning a new system as part of a new team.
And because Gardner-Johnson is precisely the type of player Buffalo has needed on defense the past few seasons.
