Just days before the World Cup, Germany suffered the most devastating injury news possible. 18-year-old Bayern Munich wonderkid Lennart Karl was ruled out of the World Cup after suffering a muscle injury in training. After an excellent debut season with FC Bayern, the youngster was set to compete for a starting spot in Germany’s games this summer.
Speaking to the media after Germany’s 2-1 win over the USMNT, Stuttgart striker Deniz Undav explained how Karl suffered his injury, and expressed his sorrow
over the fact that the youngster will miss the tournament.
Deniz Undav says Lennart Karl suffered the injury while attempting a shot shortly before the end of the final training session yesterday: “We all feel sorry for him. He’s a great kid. He’s done an excellent job here. But he has a huge future ahead of him and will play in many more tournaments” [@kerry_hau]
Injuries can strike at any time, for any reason, and Karl is proof of that. At the end of a long, grueling season, muscle injuries are a footballer’s worst enemy, and the youngster drew the short straw this time. Now he will have to focus on his recovery, while Germany will have to figure out a way to win without him.
