Fresh off an extra innings victory over the Seattle Mariners, the Athletics competed for a series win this afternoon at T-Mobile Stadium in Seattle. Taking the mound for the Athletics is 27-year-old lefty Jacob Lopez against 28-year-old righty Logan Gilbert for the Mariners. It would not be Lopez’ day.
The M’s got on the board early when Cal Raleigh, who had been kept quiet most of the series homered following a Randy Arozarena base hit. That put the Mariners in the lead, 2-0. The A’s didn’t take
much longer to make their first mark on the scoreboard, when Jacob Wilson homered of the first pitch he saw from Gilbert.
The Mariners got it going again in the bottom of the second. Jorge Polanco led off with a walk and a stolen base. Randy Arozarena doubled to drive him home. Then Cal Raleigh hit his 49th homer of the year to drive home Arozarena and make the score 5-1.
Lopez did not make it out of the bottom of the third. In fact, he didn’t record an out in the inning. The Mariners loaded the bases on two walks and a single and then recently recalled outfielder Victor Robles singled to drive in two runs and chase Lopez with the score 7-1. Eduarniel Núñez replaced him with runners on first and second with no outs. Both runners belong to Lopez. Randy Arozarena was hit on the elbow by a Núñez pitch to reload the bases. Raleigh struck out swinging for the first out. But Julio Rodriguez singled to drive in two more (Lopez) runs. That made the score 9-1. Lopez final line was two innings, nine earned runs on six hits and six walks. It was Lopez shortest start of the season. Josh Naylor doubled to clear the bases once again. Arozarena and J-Rod both scored to bring the run total to eleven.
Joey Estes replaced Eduarniel Núñez in the bottom of the fifth. He sent the Mariners down in order. The A’s showed a little life in the top of the seventh, when Carlos Vargas replaced Logan Gilbert. Jacob Wilson and JJ Bleday each singled and both moved up a base on Vargas wild pitch. Willie MacIver singled on a line drive to left field scoring Wilson and moving Bleday to third. Brett Harris walked to load the bases with one out. Luis Urías was hit by a pitch on the wrist. That drove in Bleday, but Shea Langeliers followed that A-B with a double play ball to end the inning. Headed to the bottom of the seventh, the Mariners led 11-3.
In the top of the eighth, Colby Thomas led off with a double and scored on a Jacob Wilson ground out. That brought the score to 11-4. The A’s comeback ended there as they dropped the game, the weekend series, and the season series with this loss.
