Omari Kellyman’s time as a Chelsea player is over (at least for now), but the 20-year-old’s journey as a BlueCo line-item continues as he moves to RC Strasbourg on a permanent transfer. The move was made official today, booked at a reported €6m.
That’s a steep discount on the over €20m Chelsea paid to Aston Villa two years ago, though that fee was inflated to game the PSR system that was still in place at the time. Kellyman was the accounting exercise part of Ian Maatsen’s move to Villa.
Unfortunately
for Kellyman, even if he had greater designs than spreadsheet glory for his time as a Chelsea player, those plans were disrupted by injury almost immediately, costing him almost that entire first season. Last season he went out on loan, to League One side Cardiff City, and did very well in helping them earn automatic promotion to the Championship.
Since Kellyman’s move is a transfer, we still can send one more player on loan to our sister-club this summer.
Chelsea have reportedly also retained a sell-on clause, which we saw pay great dividend in the case of Diego Moreira, who recently completed a big-money move from RCSA to AC Milan (with Chelsea earning over €20m from it).
