FC Barcelona are considering making a late push to sign Spain’s World Cup hero Rodri, after he was edging towards finalizing his move to Real Madrid, according to Catalan radio.
He finishes his contract with Manchester City FC next year, and has seen his stock rise tremendously after returning from a long-term injury to help lead La Roja to World Cup glory.
It’s understood that Real have an advantage when it comes to numbers, and may be able to simply outbid any attempted hijacking from Barça. And
to be totally clear, Barcelona have just reportedly expressed some interest rather than sent any specific bid yet.
However, Barcelona will be without Frenkie de Jong due to an injury, and there are some within the club who reportedly feel that a new midfielder would help the team a lot regardless of the Dutch star’s status.
Rodri, a Madrid native, came up through the ranks at Atlético de Madrid before joining Villarreal’s academy, where he broke through in La Liga. He then re-joined Atlético before leaving Spain to join City.
Rodri’s status couldn’t be higher in his native country following a successful World Cup campaign in which he was – perhaps controversially – voted as the best player of the tournament. There were some rumors that Florentino Pérez was reluctant to go for the midfielder because Enrique Riquelme, the businessman’s opponent in the presidential election, made signing Rodri a key part of his project. But if that ever mattered, it does not matter now. Rodri is seen as a key signing by the fans and leadership at “the White House.”
