For a player who went undrafted in the 2026 NFL Draft and was waived by the Philadelphia Eagles before being claimed by the Cleveland Browns, TE Dae’Quan Wright has become a big name in the story of football. While one of our astute readers was very excited when the Browns claimed Wright, his odds of making the team’s initial 53-man roster were low, but the lack of depth at his position might have helped.
Instead, Wright was a part of a lawsuit that deemed he could return to college, despite another
legal ruling seemingly stopping that, and was waived by Cleveland to make a “history” making move to LSU possible. On Tuesday, Wright cleared waivers and was set to join Lane Kiffin’s Tigers:

The SEC joined the Big 10 in passing a policy that would lead to LSU receiving penalties if they had Wright, or any other player who met the three provisions of the policy, on their roster:
As former Green Bay Packers executive Andrew Brandt is fond of saying, “There will be lawyers.”
As for Wright returning to the Browns, anything is possible, as he is now an NFL (and potentially college) free agent. Given the timing, even if Wright signs with an NFL team, it is highly unlikely to be on a 53-man roster; instead, the athletic tight end would likely end up on a practice squad.
Then again, Wright’s story has already had lots of twists and turns; perhaps he tries to transfer to a school in a conference that hasn’t yet passed a rule like the Big 10 and SEC. Given the wild swings so far, a return to Cleveland is likely an option as well.
