Jayden Daniels was asked about his individual goals for the upcoming Commanders season.
The third-year quarterback’s answer was simple, to the point and didn’t include a single stat.
“Win football games.”
There was then a brief pause in the Wednesday afternoon press conference, as if Daniels was expected to say more. Nope. That was it.
The stats don’t matter. The wins do. They normally go together, with quality quarterback totals generating team success, but we understand Daniels’ underlying message.
Style points be dammed. Just get the job done.
That’s yet another example of his leadership entering his third NFL season, following a standout rookie campaign and an injury-marred sophomore season.
Daniels expressed no interest in rehashing a 5-12 season in 2025 where he suffered one physical setback after another, playing seven games and finishing just four.
The 2024 offensive rookie of the year said he’s done talking about last season. He’s “moving on.” That has been clear during this offseason program.
Daniels has entered Year 3 intent on being a leader in all facets, vocally and on the field. He is confident and comfortable in that role on this team.
“It comes with maturity and what I’ve built the calluses I have from my rookie year and my second year,” Daniels told on-site reporters after Wednesday’s minicamp practice. “I want to go out and be intentional with everything I do.”
Calluses is an interesting term. That’s a hardened part of the skin designed to protect a part of the body from abrasion and pressure. He explained its use further, saying they developed from his in-game experiences and what he has seen. He’s tougher now, and more intentional with what he needs from teammates around him.”
Confidence from a team’s central player is invaluable, especially with new schemes being installed and lots of new faces in the building.
“He’s a great leader,” rookie receiver Antonio Williams said in a press conference, “he’s a great voice on the field.”
While Daniels has one more practice left in the Commanders offseason program, his work won’t stop. He’ll just perform it away from the team’s practice facility. There will surely be meet-ups with receivers and tight ends, but the daily grind doesn’t stop.
“The same thing I’ve always been doing,” Daniels said. “It doesn’t change, even though I’m away from the facility. I’m still studying, still communicating, still watching film. That doesn’t change.”
Daniels talked a ton about being intentional with everything he has done and will do down the road. Teammates respect that has the continue to prepare for the season ahead.
“You can see the command that he has in the huddle,” receiver Van Jefferson told on-site reporters in a post-practice scrum, via NBC’s JP Finlay. “He’s focused and you can see how great he wants to be. …I’m excited for (Jayden) and the year he’s going to have. I believe he’ll do great things.”
