Depending on who you ask, Federico Chiesa’s role on the fringes of Liverpool’s first team either comes down to the player’s lack of fitness and injury resistance or it’s simply because manager Arne Slot doesn’t particularly rate the 28-year-old Italian international attacker.
Either way, Chiesa’s minutes have been just as limited in year two at Liverpool as they were back in year one, and with a World Cup on the horizon there’s chatter in Italy that former club Juventus could look to take advantage
of the situation and bring him back to Serie A.
At least that’s the story this week from The Liverpool Echo, who suggest that Juventus are currently weighing up a loan offer for Chiesea, something one imagines would hold little interest for Liverpool but that could hinge on the player’s desire to push for a move away.
Chiesa has been a model squad member despite his lack of regular playing time—and that he’s often been one of the more impressive players on the pitch when he does get the chance—but after a season and a half, it’s easy to imagine him getting frustrated by the situation.
With Mohamed Salah at the Africa Cup of Nations and Alexander Isak out injured, though, we suspect this might be a case of everyone on the Liverpool end, Chiesa included, wanting to give it a few weeks to see whether the player’s role grows with those two now absent.
It does feel a little bit, though, as if this might could be the final make or break moment for Cheisa as a Red, and if minutes remain hard to come by while Salah and Isak are unavailable, one can imagine the player pushing for a move back to Italy late in the January window.
