Manuel Neuer has just recently turned 40 years old, and he had previously agreed with Bayern Munich that this would be the milestone by which he would make a decision on whether or not he wants to extend his contract with the club for another year. While he is currently out injured and working on his comeback during the international break, a decision has not yet been made, and it now seems that he will be given some more time.
Per information from Sport Bild’s Christian Falk (via @iMiaSanMia), Neuer
has requested to postpone his decision and has asked the club for a bit more time to make up his mind. He wants to be able to consider all of his options, especially taking into account his fitness level and injury history. As things stand right now, Neuer is now expected to make a final decision and discuss it with the club after the Real Madrid matches in the Champions League quarterfinals, of which Bayern have the second leg at home at the Allianz Arena. Leg two is scheduled for April 15th, so the clock is still ticking.
If he decides not to extend, he could then leave the club on a free transfer this summer, but staying and extending for another year would likely come with certain conditions. The club knew full well when they bought Jonas Urbig from FC Köln back in the winter of 2025 that he could, and likely would, eventually become the number one keeper at the club, and the idea of split minutes with Neuer had even been discussed as early as this season. Urbig has had his chances as things have turned out with Neuer’s injury spells, and Sven Ulreich even had to deputize recently since both Neuer and Urbig were out injured.
Neuer has been working individually in Munich to be back fit in time for April 4th’s Bundesliga clash vs. SC Freiburg to ensure that he would also be ready to play in leg one against Real Madrid in the Champions League quarterfinals. He has already had setbacks with injury comebacks this season, so the club is doing everything in their power to not rush him back prematurely to avoid any sort of complications or re-aggravations. Another injury could heavily impact his decision on his future.
