TCU Football will begin a search for a new quarterback as three-year starter Josh Hoover announced his intention to enter the transfer portal when it officially opens next week.
A three-star prospect out of Rockwall Heath in the Class of 2022, Hoover redshirted his first year in Fort Worth and started the 2023 season behind starter Chandler Morris. After Morris went down with injury, Hoover took the reins and exploded onto the scene in his first start, completing 37 passes for 439 yards and 4 touchdowns
in a 44-11 TCU win over BYU. Hoover would go on to etch his name across TCU passing record books, throwing for 9,629 yards (3rd all-time) with 71 touchdowns (3rd all-time) and 33 interceptions, posting a 23-13 record in his 36 games played. Hoover’s 2024 campaign was one of the most prolific passing seasons in TCU history, his 3,949 pass yards is the most ever by a Horned Frogs QB and his 27 TDs matched Andy Dalton’s 2010 for 4th best ever. Hoover had already surpassed that touchdown total with 29 in 2025, with an opportunity to have climbed further up the leaderboard with a strong Alamo Bowl performance, but he has as well formally confirmed he will not play in the bowl game. Rather than truly cement his legacy as a Horned Frog, Hoover will now seek the greener pastures and massive paydays of the transfer portal; expect Hoover to garner a bidding war between the sport’s biggest spenders as many major programs are seeking new quarterbacks.
For the upcoming Alamo Bowl, TCU will turn to a QB room led by 6th year senior Ken Seals who has thrown 19 total passes in two seasons with the Horned Frogs after three seasons as a starter at Vanderbilt. Going forward, true freshman Adam Schobel would be the top candidate currently on the roster, a four-star legacy Horned Frog out of Columbus, TX, ranked as the No. 13 QB in the 2025 recruiting class. TCU will likely also be a major player in the transfer marketplace among the crowded list of available QBs in the portal.
TCU will play the USC Trojans in the Alamo Bowl in San Antonio, TX on December 30. The Horned Frogs open the 2026 season with a Week Zero battle with North Carolina from Dublin, Ireland.
