The Virginia Tech Hokies (3-5, 2-2) are back home this weekend, looking for their first win over a ranked team this season as the No. 16 Louisville Cardinals (6-1, 3-1) come to town. The Hokies are coming
off a thrilling 42-34 double overtime win over California last Friday night. Meanwhile, the Cardinals are fresh off a 38-24 win over Boston College. However, Louisville is only two weeks removed from taking down then-No. 2 Miami, 24-21.
Louisville’s only loss this season came to Virginia in overtime.
The Cardinals are led by senior quarterback Miller Moss, a transfer from USC. Moss has completed 65% of his passes for 1,793 yards, with 10 touchdowns and five interceptions. He’s strictly a pocket passer, which is good news for the Hokies, not having to worry about Moss beating them with his legs. The Cards do have a capable rushing attack, led by sophomore Isaac Brown. Brown has rushed for 652 yards and four touchdowns, and averages 8.7 yards per carry.
Senior wide receiver Chris Bell is the player to watch for Louisville. The 6-foot-2, 220-pound Bell has a little bit of A.J.Brown/Deebo Samuel in his game. He has excellent size, but looks like a running back once the ball is in his hands. He does plenty of damage after the catch.
Louisville offensive rankings:
- Passing offense: N0. 31
- Rushing offense: No. 79
- Scoring offense: No. 33
The Cardinals are a balanced team. They play good, sound defense, whether it’s against the run or the pass, and can get after opposing quarterbacks. You better not expect Kyron Drones to run the ball against Louisville the way he did last week against Cal.
Louisville defensive rankings:
- Pass efficiency defense: No. 13
- Rushing defense: No. 21
- Scoring defense: No. 44
The Cardinals have played teams close this season, so if Tech can keep it close into the fourth quarter, you just never know. The key for the Hokies is to get running backs Terion Stewart and Marcellous Hawkins involved early and often, with some Drones sprinkled in. If Tech can run the ball, it has a shot at the upset.
