Bayern Munich were challenged by SV Wehen Wiesbaden in the first round of the DFB-Pokal. Playing away from home the Bavarians did not have it easy despite possessing an overwhelming edge in quality over the opposition from the third division.
No fingers pointed
Wehen who played with a low block invited the visitors to play uncomfortably high and hoped to expose vulnerabilities in Bayern backline. The home side found their opportunity as their strategy bore fruit. Fatih Kaya, the Wehen captain finished off two great
chances leaving his marker Jonathan Tah in the dust on both occasions.
However, the Bayern goalkeeper Jonas Urbig in the post match interview(via @iMiaSanMia) clearly stated that he did not wish to blame any individual for the goals conceded. “I wouldn’t point the finger at anyone. It’s not the fault of individual players. Everyone can do better in certain situations. We’ll analyze it in the coming days and draw the right conclusions so it doesn’t happen again against Augsburg” said Urbig.
Bayern’s mistakes

Urbig is definitely justified in not pointing any fingers publicly in the spirit of the game. However, Bayern and Vincent Kompany do have areas that need to be looked at from this game. Firstly, the fullback duo of Raphaël Guerreiro and Sacha Boey is too forward heavy. One of them needed to trackback more effectively to help out the backline. VK adjusted with the substitution of Josip Stanišić which added more stability.
Secondly, not to nitpick but both Urbig and Tah do share some blame. The Wehen captain had shot the first goal right past the goalie’s foot. Anticipating a repeat, Urbig committed early to a low position as he went up against Kaya again. The striker however, did exceptionally well to spot Urbig’s mistake and shot the ball above the keeper. It was a rookie mistake but one that could have proven very costly in a cup fixture.
Tah on the other hand was outsmarted on both occasions by Kaya. While the second goal exposed Tah’s speed, the first goal showed poorly on his anticipation since he was ahead of Kaya in the box as the cross came in but failed to intercept the ball.
The intention is not to spell doom and gloom. Cup games like these are pressure scenarios and the Bavarians did fantastic as they came back from a tough situation and won the game. The mistakes committed also have the impact of the team being relatively new with each other. But having said that, and with all due respect to Wehen Wiesbaden, these mistakes are still unacceptable against a third division side.
Bayern Munich traveled to Frankfurt to take on SV Wehen Wiesbaden in the DFB-Pokal.
The home side was game and did give Bayern Munich a battle. Sure, the Bavarians were deeper, quicker, stronger, and better, but the 3.Liga side was not going to go down easy in what was an entertaining match. Bayern Munich ultimately won 3-2.
