Newcastle United manager Eddie Howe remains determined to strengthen his midfield before the transfer window closes and followin the exit of Sandro Tonali on his way to Tottenham.
The first real effort to accomplish that came on Friday, as the Magpies sent an offer to the Spurs for midfielder Lucas Bergval, only to have it swiftly rejected.
However, a fresh report suggests the Magpies have no intention of walking away from their new No. 1 target, with Newcastle preparing to return with a second offer
for Bergvall after Tottenham Hotspur rejected the club’s opening bid for the highly rated midfielder.
According to Italian journalist Fabio Gatto, Newcastle is expected to make another attempt to sign Bergvall within the next 24 to 72 hours after seeing its initial offer turned down by Tottenham.
Rather than significantly increasing the transfer fee, Gatto claims Newcastle is working on improving the structure of the deal in an effort to reach an agreement with Spurs.
The update follows widespread reports that Tottenham rejected Newcastle’s opening bid of around €54 million (£46 million), although the North London club is reportedly willing to consider a sale if its valuation of roughly €58 million (£50 million) is met.
It’s also known that Bergvall’s desire is to have more regular playing time, which will be complicated in London after the arrivals of Mateus Fernandes and former Newcastle midfielder Tonali, suggesting that he could pursue a move and encourage the Magpies as negotiations continue.
The 20-year-old enjoyed a breakout campaign last season, making 45 appearances for Tottenham before an ankle injury cut short his season, while also earning the club’s Player of the Season award.
Newcastle views Bergvall as an ideal long-term addition who fits the club’s recruitment strategy of targeting young players, but he would already arrive with top-level experience in a massive plus.
