The Miami Dolphins are coming out of their Week 6 bye hoping to mark their first win of the season as they face the New York Jets this weekend. Miami’s immediate focus is to put together a full game and turn flashes of competitiveness into consistency.
The longer-term focus has the coaching staff and front office considering which players from this rebuild will remain with the team in 2027 and beyond. Miami has 22 players on expiring contracts this season, and Miami Dolphins on SI writer Alain Poupart
took a look at who could be playing themselves into a contract extension as well as players who are likely to hit the free agent market after the season.
For the four most likely free agents to return, Poupart starts with a veteran at a position everyone expected to be a weak point for the Dolphins this season:
CB JuJu Brents — This is a player the Dolphins should prioritize because he still continues to perform at a high level and plays a premium position. The ability to stay healthy has been the issue so far in Brents’ career, but he hasn’t missed a game yet (knock on wood) so far in 2026.
As for a player who might be allowed to leave in free agency, Poupart started his list of four with a name many fans could have guessed:
T Austin Jackson — Despite his poor Pro Football Focus standing (he’s dead last among all NFL tackles), Jackson is a solid veteran tackle who’s simply off to a bad start. The issue with Jackson is how it would cost to bring him back in what probably wouldn’t be a starting role and whether he even would be interested in that idea after being asked to take a pay cut this year.
