As part of the German national team’s backend overhaul, Per Mertesacker will be joining as the managing director for the DFB from January 2027. He will be bringing vital experience as a World Cup winner and youth coach after spending over 8 years at the helm of Arsenal’s youth academy.
The DFB announced Mertesacker’s appointment on Friday. He will be succeeding Andreas Rettig who’s contract expires at the end of this year. At his new role, Per is expected to supervise the national teams and head youth
development. His experience at Arsenal as a player and academy manager will be vital in driving forward the talent development to fill various gaps in the national team. Under his stewardship, Bukayo Saka and Myles Lewis-Skelly are some of the talents that have risen through the academy to become prominent players for Arsenal.
He outlined his plans and vision as he expressed his joy on taking up a vital job in the national setup. “I’m really looking forward to this new role and the responsibility that comes with it. I have always remained in contact with the DFB, even after my international career ended, so returning in this role is something very special for me. German football has enormous potential. With humility, a willingness to work hard and the necessary patience, we want to develop talented players and people who can make the difference. Together, we want to create an environment in which players can take responsibility, grow through challenges and fulfil their potential, from grassroots level all the way through to the national teams. It’s an honour for me to have the opportunity to help shape the DFB’s future and contribute to its continued development,” said Mertesacker.
