Following last night’s loss to Miami, Hubert Davis was extremely quiet when it came to the status of his star freshman, Caleb Wilson. When he was asked about Wilson having to have his hand looked at, ending up in the locker room along with his mother, and him emerging from the tunnel with his hand wrapped like a boxer, Davis simply said, “There was no situation.” Well, there is in fact a situation, and the situation is that Wilson sprained his left wrist, and it is unclear whether or not he will
be able to go against Pitt on Saturday.
While there are some rumors that Wilson is listed as “questionable,” for Saturday, TarHeel247’s Andrew Jones tweeted that the school has not officially said anything, and that the injury report will come out on Friday:
It was clear that something wasn’t right with Wilson during the game on Tuesday night, but what was unclear was whether or not it was injury-related until UNC athletic trainer Doug Halverson was spotted checking out Wilson’s wrist on the bench. When Wilson did finally return to the game he wasn’t able to have much of an impact, and ultimately finished with 12 points, six rebounds, and zero assists. It was the first time that he failed to score 20 points since UNC lost to Cal in Berkeley on January 17th.
Going back to Hubert Davis’ remarks after the game, there is a fine between not having enough information when you are in front of the media, and flat-out lying. Davis has had a bad habit of being misleading or intentionally avoidant when media asks him certain questions, and speaking from my own perspective as a fan, it only makes losses like the one against the Hurricanes worse. Simply stating that he doesn’t know whether or not the injury had an impact on Wilson’s game would’ve been understandable, but saying with your chest that “there is no situation” is misleading at best. Head coaches do not have their jobs to be great speakers, but fans, media members, and if we want to get deep into it, friends and family deserve some semblance of honesty when answering questions.
That said, we will have to wait and see what happens this weekend. If Wilson isn’t good to go, there are probably worse teams that UNC could face, but also it would be devastating if his teammates don’t step up and they ended up losing the game. Hopefully we will receive more information in the next 48 hours.
