James McConnell today signed a new long-term contract with Liverpool and will spend the rest of 2025/26 on loan with Ajax.
Moving to the Eredivisie club will allow Liverpool to retain his services for the future while developing his skillset at the professional level in the short term. McConnell will once again work with John Heitinga, who was in the Liverpool coaching group last season but who started his management career at Ajax, where he also played professionally.
McConnell has been at Liverpool
since the U15 level, and has 13 senior appearances for the Reds. He debuted in the Champions League in 2023 under Jürgen Klopp, and counts a Carabao Cup winners medal as one of his achievements.
The English youth international will turn 21 next month, and has made one appearance for the youth set-up. He is widely considered a promising midfielder, having moved from a more attacking role to a more holding position recently.
Ajax finished second in the Eredivise last season, and will hope to challenge at the top once again this season. In all, they’ve won the Dutch top flight 36 times, but their last win was back in 2021/22.
