On the eve of the first pitch of the 2025 World Series, two west coast teams have announced their new managerial hires. Former A’s catcher Kurt Suzuki will take the helm of our AL West rival Los Angeles
Angels. Suzuki has served as a front office assistant for the team for the past two years. He was originally drafted by the A’s in 2004 and made his major league debut with the team in 2007. He played catcher for the A’s until he was traded in August of 2012.
The San Francisco Giants have made an interesting choice, hiring University of Tennessee head coach Tony Vitello to be their next manager. The 47-year-old Vitello, who has been the head coach at the UT since the 2018 season, is set to become the first college coach to serve as a Major League manager without any prior coaching experience at the professional level. In fact he never played professional baseball either. He was an infielder for the University of Missouri and went directly into coaching after graduation.
