The Iowa State gymnastics team competed in their second meet of the season on Sunday when they visited Denver for a Big 12 meet. The Pioneers picked up the conference win, beating the Cyclones 196.525 to 192.550. Denver was ranked No. 17 at the time of the meet. The meet was nationally televised on ESPN2.
The Cyclones are back in action on Friday, Feb. 6 when they return home to face West Virginia. The meet will begin at 6:30 and will be broadcast on ESPN+.
Last season, the Cyclones and Mountaineers
faced twice with Iowa State winning both times. The Cyclones beat West Virginia in Morgantown on Feb. 9, 2025, 196.375 to 194.175 and a month later in West Valley Utah, 196.775 to 194.875 to place sixth at the Big 12 Championships.
Iowa State head coach Ashley Miles Greig told Cyclones.com that she was proud of her team’s finish at the meet.
“Very proud of the way this team finished this meet. With Fred, that was very uncharacteristic of her and that was challenging for our team afterwards. But I was so proud of the team after that, and I think we have a lot to be proud of today. You know, Haylee Hardin tied her career high, so I think she is going to get that 10.0 eventually. Overall, the team showed how tough they are today,” said Head Coach Ashley Miles Greig.
The Cyclones trailed 48.975 to 48.825 after the first rotation. The first rotation was bars. Denver got off to a hot start with five of their scores ahead of Iowa State’s top score from Paige Willis (9.650). Kiley Rorich from Denver had the top score on the bars with a 9.900. Three other Denver scores were 9.800 or higher. Peyton Nock captured the second highest Cyclone score with a 9.625, a new career high score.
The Cyclones trailed 98.100 to 94.750 after the second rotation. The second rotation was the vault. A pair of Iowa State finishes were the high scores on the event at the meet. Noelle Adams and Aubree Guinee each scored 9.825 tying for the second highest score in the event behind Denver’s Shyla Bhatia who had the top score of 9.850. The score was a season high for Adams and a career high score for Guinee. Haylee Hardin was next with a score of 9.775.
The third rotation was the balance beam. ISU’s Lauren O’Brochta had the third best score on the floor rotation. O’Brochta had a new season high score of 9.825 on the event. Denver’s Megan Aarnold and Cecilla Cooley led the top scores with 9.875 and 9.850.Denver scored 49.500 while Iowa State scored 48.650. Chloe Hammond was the second Iowa State scorer in the event and turned in a season high score of 9.800.
The final rotation was the floor. Iowa State’s Haylee Hardin turned in another good performance with a score of 9.950. That score ties her career high on the event. Hardin has scored a 9.9 or higher every week she has competed floor this season. Aubree Guinee collected a new season high score with a 9.850.
The Pioneers are a relatively young team with seven newcomers with many from their No. 9 ranked freshman recruiting class. The Pioneers returned seven from their roster last year in seniors Mila Brusch, Cecilia Cooley, and Kiley Rorich.
Denver’s 49.500 score on the floor and the Pioneers score of 49.150 on the bars was also a new season high for the event.
