Greg Hamilton recently opened up a bit more about his 2021 release from WWE, where he worked for five years as a ring announcer.
In a message on Instagram, Hamilton (real name Greg Hutson) claimed he was let go due to his appearance in a music video that he didn’t even know about, which contrasts from the statement he gave at the time of his departure.
Furthermore, he said the video was NIL (Name, Image, and Likeness) material that was owned by WWE.
“Truth for all of you who have never worked for the
FED [WWE]…..I actually had no idea I was in a video…..I got a call from Talent Relations and was fired for it,” Hamilton wrote. “I had just landed from Saudi Arabia and was watching Cincinnati Bearcats Football. For years I’ve dealt with your opinions….this is the truth. Got fired for being in a music video I never agreed to for NIL that WWE owned. Y’all done?”
Leading up to his release in the fall of 2021, Hamilton was involved in a dispute with rapper Westside Gunn, who the announcer claimed sampled his voice without permission. At the time, Hamilton threatened legal action from WWE lawyer. Instead, he was soon sharing the news of his release from the company.
He said in an October, 2021, statement: “After 6 years and 52 weeks a year, it’s time to say ‘goodbye’. First and foremost, don’t let the internet or social media gas you up; this was a mutual respect departure from a great company. Nothing but respect from both sides. It’s business. We all know our worth.”
Since leaving WWE, Hamilton has continued working as an announcer. In April 2025, the MMA promotion Professional Fighters League (PFL) shared Hamilton was joining its broadcast team.
