On September 10th all the way back in the year 1983, Joseph Daniel Votto first graced the presence of the world in Toronto, Ontario. It would likely be a record if he took his first walk that same day, but I honestly wouldn’t put it too far past him.
Drafted by the Cincinnati Reds in the 2nd round of the 2002 MLB Draft out of Canada’s Richview Collegiate Institute, the future Hall of Famer went on to do some pretty incredible stuff across 17 seasons in a Reds uniform. Once robbed of the Rookie of the Year
Award and later robbed of what would’ve been his 2nd National League MVP, the 2010 NL MVP led the National League in OBP in seven (7!) different seasons while three times leading all of Major League Baseball in the stat.
Across a 9-year window from 2010 through 2018, he put up a ridiculous .311/.436/.538 (.964 OPS) in 5542 PA, work that included 216 homers, more walks (970) than strikeouts (965), and was good for a 159 OPS+ and absurd 51.1 bWAR. And through it all he was the coolest damn sonofagun on the planet.
Today marks Joey’s 43rd birthday, and for that we celebrate.
