Tom Bischof has usually looked in from the outside since moving to Bayern Munich, but a recent spate of injuries to key players meant he earned a chance to start in midfield for Bayern—and boy, did he deliver. Look at this stat from Bayern’s 2-0 win over Atlético Madrid in the Champions League:
In the absence of usual starter Aleksandar Pavlović, the 21-year-old
midfielder joined Joshua Kimmich—himself a returnee following a brief absence due to bereavement—as the team tries to overcome these injuries and pick up results at the same time. The young midfielder stepped up to the plate and played possibly one of his best games this season.
Fans tend to forget that Bischof was already a starter for Hoffenheim, even though he is seen as a player who has to assert himself at Bayern. Yet he did just that in a high-stakes European game. Apart from possibly the latter stages of the UCL or the World Cup, it doesn’t get better than this.
