Garrett Crochet and Will Warren will face off for the second time in a little under a month as the Yankees try and sweep the Red Sox at Fenway. A potential win here would not only cement New York’s position as the top Wild Card team but also further endanger the Red Sox’s playoff hopes, with the Cleveland Guardians and Texas Rangers nipping at the heels of Boston.
Before the first pitch is thrown, Yankee fans can take pleasure in what could be seen as a cathartic experience: having the same matchup
that three weeks ago represented a low point in the Yankee season, now bringing forth the opportunity of a sweep against their biggest rival.
On an individual note, Warren, who struggled heavily in that previous match against Boston, has since improved, particularly in his last couple of starts, allowing only two runs in each of them. Having lost both of those games, New York’s mission to provide Warren with better run support comes against one of the toughest customers in the American League, Crochet. No one has struck out more batters than Crochet (228) this season.
Repeating the strategy of a recent win against the Tigers in which Detroit used a lefty opener, the Yankees will have Austin Slater batting leadoff against Crochet. It didn’t quite work all that well last time, with him striking out thrice in five at-bats, including one in the first inning ahead of an Aaron Judge homer. Nevertheless, Slater was brought over for this specific reason: to be a weapon against lefties.
