One of the main talking points on the offensive side of the ball heading into OTA’s and training camp was who could breakout in the tight end room.
Breyvn Spann-Ford and rookie undrafted free agent Michael Trigg were gaining a lot of steam and dominating discussion about the tight end position. Recently in training camp practices, Jake Ferguson has taken over the conversation.
Ferguson had a disappointing 2025 season after averaging just 7.3 yards per reception and fumbling three times. He has been
a quality player for the Cowboys since being drafted in the fourth round of the 2022 NFL draft. Despite posting a career high in receptions and touchdowns, the Cowboys need a bigger impact from their tight end room between the 20’s, and that’s why people were getting excited about what Spann-Ford and Trigg could add.
Through the first weeks of training camp, Ferguson has been one of the better players on the offensive side of the football. Not only does Ferguson look like he’s picking up where he left off in terms of touchdowns in 2025, he is also making a lot of plays up the seams and in the intermediate-to-deep portions of the field. In Saturday’s practice, Ferguson caught multiple touchdowns, and made multiple big plays in team period work.
With CeeDee Lamb, George Pickens, and the Cowboys running game getting so much attention from opposing defensive coordinators, Ferguson has an opportunity in 2026 to put up career high numbers in all major categories with a healthy Dak Prescott.
We are just three days away from the Cowboys joint practice with the NFC favorite, the Los Angeles Rams. That will give us all a great glimpse into how high of ceiling Ferguson may have for the upcoming season, but as of now the fifth-year tight end is proving to be ahead of schedule and showing signs that 2026 could be one of the better years of his career.
