The Cleveland Browns head coach search is nowhere near finished and cannot able to be concluded as the team has not yet complied with the Rooney Rule and their final second interview candidate is not eligible to interview with the team in person until Monday, at the earliest.
None of that means anything has gone wrong in the Browns coaching search.
Yes, Mike McDaniel withdrew his name from Cleveland’s search, along with others, so he could take the offensive coordinator job with the Los Angeles Rams.
McDaniel has since accepted an interview with the Buffalo Bills, as quarterbacks tend to be key deciders for candidates. Yes, Jesse Minter also dropped out of the Browns search on the same day he was hired as the Baltimore Ravens head coach.
Neither of those decisions means things are going poorly in Cleveland’s search.
According to Tom Pelissero, the Browns search process is just “unlike any other in the NFL” and includes things like essays, personality profiles, tests, and more:
Most will listen to that video and come away with the final comment that “the Browns are the Browns,” being a negative one. The reality is, all that matters is that the team hires a coach who ends up winning games. As Pelissero notes, this is the team’s process that was put in place under Paul DePodesta years ago and was likely one that Sean McDermott and Kevin Stefanski did well with.
It was also the process the team was going to use once owner Jimmy Haslam retained GM Andrew Berry while firing Stefanski. The Browns have their process, and they are sticking with it.
