Let’s get to the Philadelphia Eagles news and links …
Game Preview – PHI at TB – Iggles Blitz Mayfield shredded the Eagles last year, throwing for 347 yards. Cooper DeJean wasn’t a starter and the secondary
struggled. The secondary should be better this time around, but will have a new starter. Kelee Ringo will start in place of Adoree Jackson/Jakorian Bennett. This is a huge opportunity for Ringo. The Eagles love his raw ability and would love to see him play well. He wasn’t good enough to win a starting job this summer. He has been excellent on STs. Jalen Hurts only threw for 158 yards last year in Tampa. He was sacked six times. Parris Campbell was the leading wideout, with 4 catches for 17 yards. Neither AJ nor DeVonta played. Sunday will be very different. Hurts will have Brown, Smitty and Jahan Dotson as his receivers. The question is whether we will see the offense from the second half of the Rams game. The Eagles spread things out and went more into attack mode. All the players talked this week about wanting to be more aggressive. Let’s hope we see that.
Eagles Opponent Film Room: Scouting the Tampa Bay Buccaneers’ Defense – BGN
What stands out most is how few explosive passes this defense has allowed. Despite blitzing at one of the highest rates in the league, the Bucs have given up very little down the field. Todd Bowles constantly mixes up looks and disguises who’s coming and who’s dropping. You’ll see seven at the line, and then a DB sprinting back into a split-safety shell at the snap. They will sometimes leave short routes uncovered, but bet on their rush getting home before the QB can get the ball out. It’s a fun and aggressive defense to study. The tradeoff is that when you do hold up in protection, there are opportunities. Blitzes inevitably leave one-on-ones outside, and that’s where A.J. Brown should fancy himself. McCollum and Dean have played solidly, but the aggression creates openings if Hurts can trust his protection long enough to push it vertically.
Saquon Barkley searching for answers after sluggish start – NBCSP
When things aren’t going well and Saquon Barkley needs a fresh set of eyes, he has a pretty impressive list of friends he can call for advice. Guys like Derrick Henry, Barry Sanders and Adrian Peterson. Safe to say he took advantage of that group of friends this week. “I mean, it literally was like, ‘Hey, bleep ain’t working, what do you see? What can I do?’” Barkley said at his locker Friday. “And just the honest answers that they give me, it’s important.” Barkley didn’t want to say specifically which guys in his all-pro running back circle he talked to this week – “I’m trying not to brag” – but the details aren’t what’s important. What’s important is that he is doing everything he can to figure out how to kick-start his 2025 season after a sluggish start. “I feel like I say it a lot, but it’s probably one of the coolest things of being in my position that I can reach out to a lot of special running backs before me and ask them what they’re seeing and kind of get their view on how can I attack defenses when they’re attacking us the way they’ve been,” he said.
Dallas Goedert start or sit: Week 4 fantasy football advice – SB Nation
Fantasy Football analysis: Eagles TE Dallas Goedert. Goedert caught one pass against the Rams last week and he made it count as it was a 33-yard touchdown pass that sparked the team’s comeback in the second half. The Eagles had done virtually nothing through the air up to that point and the veteran’s touchdown helped wake up a downfield passing game that had been stagnant through the first two-and-a-half games of the regular season. That lone catch and score made Goedert a top-10 fantasy tight end for the week and that came after he sat out of their victory over the Chiefs with a knee sprain the week prior. We’ll see if that touchdown pass is the beginning of a strong run for the veterans.
NFL Week 4 same-game parlays – PFF
Jalen Hurts and the Philadelphia Eagles take advantage of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers‘ pass-funnel defense […] Since the start of last season, Jalen Hurts has been highly effective when given clean protection. Tampa Bay has found some success blitzing — an approach Hurts has historically handled well — but the Bucs have struggled to win one-on-one matchups or force pass protection breakdowns. They currently rank in the bottom 10 in forced pass-blocking mistakes. If Philadelphia’s “perfectly blocked” pass rate regresses toward its typical standard, the passing outcomes for this offense are due for a positive correction. And with the Eagles shifting away from their extreme run-heavy identity toward a more balanced approach, Hurts could be in line for increased passing volume and improved efficiency against a Buccaneers defense built to invite the pass, but lacking the pass rush to disrupt it.
As Eagles prepare for Tampa heat, do Florida teams really have a competitive advantage? – The Athletic
According to TruMedia, there have been 22 home games since 2000 for the Buccaneers, Miami Dolphins and Jacksonville Jaguars where the temperature at kickoff has been above 90 degrees — the same as the forecasted high for Sunday’s game at Raymond James Stadium, per Accuweather (though the RealFeel high is 101 degrees). Road teams actually have a 12-10 record in those games, including two losses in Week 1 of the season. One of those road losses was an in-state matchup, where the Jaguars lost on the road to the Dolphins. The Washington Commanders also lost on the road that week to the Buccaneers.
NFL Week 4 betting guide: Picks, props and why the Bears can keep it close – ESPN
Philadelphia Eagles at Tampa Bay Buccaneers total points UNDER 43.5 (-110). Both the Eagles and Bucs are giving up around 21 points per game heading into Week 4. Mike Evans (hamstring) could be down. And the Eagles really want to play a certain style of football that leads with heavy run game volume, which allows them to dictate tempo. I also trust the defensive fronts of Philly and Tampa in this one to limit explosive plays, so let’s take the under.
Tampadelphia: Where Eagles fans find salvation in Tampa Bay – PE.com
The temperature will be nearing triple digits in Tampa Bay on Sunday, but for Paul Parone it will feel like late December. When the Eagles face the Buccaneers in Florida, Parone will be down the road with a couple hundred Philadelphia fans. Parone founded a group called Tampadelphia in 1994, which hosts watch parties for every Eagles game and all postseason contests for the Phillies, 76ers, and Flyers. It’s a passion project for Parone, which makes every gameday feel like a holiday. “To me, it’s like 17 more Christmas mornings in the year because everybody walks into my room and they’re happy,” Parone said. Parone grew up in North Philadelphia and moved to Tampa Bay in 1993. He met other Philly natives who lived nearby and asked them where they watched the Birds on Sundays. They told him they didn’t have a spot, so Parone quickly changed that.
Jalen Carter draws fine for taunting – PFT
Eagles defensive tackle Jalen Carter lost some more money as a result of Sunday’s win over the Rams. But not nearly as much as he lost as a result of the Week 1 spitting incident. The NFL has fined Carter $11,593 for taunting. It happened in the fourth quarter, after Carter blocked a field goal. The incident was penalized at the time.
The 5 O’Clock Club: Week 4 – Commanders vs Falcons game day overview – Hogs Haven
The 2-1 Commanders are looking to close out the month of September with a win that will keep them in the hunt for the NFC East division crown and among the shrinking pool of NFL teams with a winning record. The 1-2 Falcons are fighting to avoid a loss that would bury them in 3rd place in a relatively non-competitive NFC South division and possibly seeing their season begin to unravel. It feels like the keys to the game will be the Commanders ability to pressure and harass Michael Penix on defense, and to find a way to move the ball against an extremely stingy Falcons defense. More explosive plays from Washington’s special teams unit could be what’s needed to tip the balance in favor of the visitors in what shapes up to be a fight between two tough defensive teams.
5 things to watch when the Cowboys host the Packers – Blogging The Boys
1. Micah’s Revenge. Let’s immediately address the elephant in the room, or the lion in this case. Micah Parsons is one of the game’s most disruptive defensive players. We spent the entire summer navigating a supposed contract dilemma that ultimately led to him being traded to the Packers a week before the season started. People can pretend to make nice and act like there is no ill will, as Parsons has repeatedly said positive things about his former team, but make no mistake about it, he will be on the prowl. He is such a competitor, and you know he is licking his chops at the idea of attacking Terence Steele and Tyler Guyton. To this point, Parsons has been relatively quiet, yet to have a multi-sack game with his new team. Expect that to change as he attempts to feast against the team that drafted him.
Big Blue View mailbag: Jaxson Dart, Dexter Lawrence, Abdul Carter, more – Big Blue View
Greg Hart asks: As the Jaxson Dart era has begun, I recall when Eli Manning replaced Kurt Warner. It may be rocky, but hopefully fun to watch. My question is this; if Brian Daboll is fired during the season who would get the nod? Alden Welles asks: So it’s safe to say that Giants fans aren’t thrilled with Brian Daboll and the decisions he’s made lately. If he gets fired midseason, who would be the best options to serve as interim head coach, keeping in mind just how crucial it will be to guide Jaxson Dart’s development? Ed says: Guys, my guess is the job would go to offensive coordinator Mike Kafka. He is the coach on staff who has consistently received head coaching interviews the past few seasons, and it would also make sense because he has been working closely with Dart. If I were thinking outside the box, I might offer defensive line coach Andre Patterson as an interim candidate. I doubt he would be a long-term candidate, but he is a respected “adult in the room” kind of coach who, I think, would keep the team together and playing hard.
Giants QB Russell Wilson expected to emerge as trade candidate following benching – NFL.com
Russell Wilson said all of the right things the day after he was benched for rookie quarterback Jaxson Dart, a player the New York Giants believe is their franchise QB. Wilson declined to ask for his release. He told reporters this past Wednesday that he would serve as a mentor for Dart, saying, “I know that I’m going to respond in the right way every day.” Wilson also added this: “I’m not done.” Don’t be surprised if another team wants to find out. Wilson is expected to emerge as a trade candidate prior to the deadline on Nov. 4, the target of a QB-needy team in need of a veteran, according to sources around the league. Wilson joins Atlanta Falcons backup Kirk Cousins as the top quarterback options potentially available if a team needs a long-term starter as quarterback injuries do happen.
