The Pittsburgh Steelers were one of only a handful of teams to keep four quarterbacks on their final 53-man rosters back in August. Most expected this, but it leaves the Steelers in a peculiar position with two veteran options on expiring contracts and two young fliers developing behind the scenes. Is it all possible Pittsburgh considers moving a quarterback at the deadline with a laundry list of injuries around the league?
It’s not crazy to ask, in fact, Jeremy Fowler of ESPN listed the veteran quarterback
as a potential trade candidate ahead of next week’s deadline.
“Quarterback Mason Rudolph,” Fowler wrote. “The Steelers are more likely to bring in players at the deadline. In fact, I don’t expect Pittsburgh to move anyone. But it has a surplus at quarterback, and should more quarterback injuries occur around the league, perhaps teams call on Rudolph with an attractive offer.”
Rudolph has started just one game over the course of the last two seasons for Pittsburgh. It’s important to keep in mind that this is simply speculation, and Fowler even says that he doesn’t expect Pittsburgh to move anyone. It would not make much sense for the Steelers to move a veteran quarterback like Rudolph who they have familiarity with and confidence in that he can run the offense and win some games should Aaron Rodgers miss time.
However, crazier things have happened. Who’s to say the Steelers won’t get an offer for Rudolph that they can’t refuse? At 6-2 overall with sole possession of first place in the AFC North, it could be a very active next few days in the trade market for general manager Omar Khan and his Steelers.
