Rutgers wrestling has made another addition in the transfer portal, as Cornell 133-pounder Bret Ungar has committed to play for the Scarlet Knights, according to The Knight Report. Ungar just finished up his fourth season with Cornell and will have one season left of eligibility to use at Rutgers.
During his freshman (2022-2023) season at Cornell, Ungar finished with a record of 20-13, reached the round of 12 at the NCAA Tournament, and was named an All-Ivy League honorable mention.
In 2023-2024, he
went back to the NCAA tournament but lost in the round of 16, while earning All-Ivy League first team honors.
However, over the next two seasons, Ungar would compete in only 19 matches total, going 12-7 over that time. In 2024-2025, he redshirted as a junior after going 5-3 in his first 8 bouts. In the 11 matches he participated in during 2025-2026, he went 7-4, but did not compete past early December. The hope is that a change of scenery can recall him back to the player he was during his freshman and sophomore years, when he made the NCAA tournament.
Ungar, who hails from Bethlehem, PA, wrestled for both Hunterdon Central and Notre Dame Green Pond (PA) in high school, going 143-5 over that time.
