Spain have been urged not to “lose sight of reality” when it comes to Barcelona star Lamine Yamal
at World Cup 2026.The teenager is heading into the tournament with plenty of expectation on his young shoulders after starring for club and country since bursting onto the scene as a 15-year-old.
However, former striker Fernando Morientes has told Spain to remember that Yamal is still just a boy and not to pile too much pressure on the Barca teenager this summer in the USA, Mexico and Canada.
“Sometimes
we lose sight of reality — 18 years is not old enough to lead the Spanish national team,” told The Mirror U.S. Sport.
“He’s a boy, but he’s got a status in the world of football that makes us all look out for him. I think he’s the figurehead of Spain at the moment.
“But we have to put a bit of responsibility on him and on the team. In addition, I think we have always shown that we are a team that is more governed by the team than by the individual figures. I think that will be the case this year as well.”
Yamal is currently out injured but Spain boss Luis de la Fuente has said he expects the Barca star to be fit in time for La Roja’s first game of the World Cup against Cape Verde.
