The biggest win of the Urban Meyer era in Jacksonville has come five years after the former head coach was unceremoniously ousted from Duval County.
On Monday, it was reported first by ON3 that the Jaguars had won a $30 million wrongful termination lawsuit against their former absentee head coach after Meyer sued over Jacksonville allegedly firing him without cause.
In reality – a place Meyer hardly visits – the Jaguars did have cause to fire Meyer just 13 games into his tenure with the club. And five-years later, the Jags are no longer on the hook for the remainder of Meyer’s four-year, $36 million deal.
Dating back to the awful ‘21 season where Meyer and the Jags went 2-11 in his time as the head man, the coach was mostly known for his viral video where he was seen with a woman who wasn’t his wife at his own restaurant and allegedly kicking then placekicker Josh Lambo, who was a witness in the lawsuit against the former Florida Gators and Ohio State head coach.
To have “cause” the Jaguars needed more than just the alleged kicking of Lambo during a stretching period, and used such grievances like Meyer’s accruing of around $300,000 in NFL fines for workout infractions and Meyer skipping a team flight after a loss in Cincinnati, among others.
NFL head coach contracts are fully guaranteed as a rule, so it was well within Meyer’s right to sue the team for the rest of his contract. On the same coin however, it was ruled legally the Jags were fully within their right to fire the man at the center of almost every ‘21 NFL scandal for cause.
At any rate, the Jaguars now have their third win of the Meyer tenure and get to keep $30 million for whatever they please. Maybe they can pay for new wigs for Trevor Lawrence, a quarterback Meyer once had in an open competition with Gardner Minshew.
What a time.
