It’s been one step forward and two steps backward for Bayern Munich’s Alphonso Davies. He sustained a muscle fiber tear in his right hamstring during Bayern’s recent 3-2 win over Eintracht Frankfurt in the Bundesliga and was forced to come off in the 50th minute to be replaced by Hiroki Ito. He’s now set for a considerable spell on the sidelines for the German Rekordmeister and a combination of Ito, Konrad Laimer, Josip Stanišić, Tom Bischof, and Raphaël Guerreiro will have to fill in at left back for Vincent
Kompany.
The injury blow for the Canadian international unfortunately comes just over two months after he had made his return to action from his cruciate ligament injury that he had suffered last March whilst on international duty with the Canadian national team for the CONCACAF Nations League. At the time, Davies’ injury was the subject of controversy because he had injured his knee in the semifinals match against Mexico and should not have played in the third place, dead rubber match against the United States that ultimately lead to the cruciate ligament tear and its severity.
Ahead of Canada’s upcoming March friendlies against the likes of Iceland and Uzbekistan, the Canadian Soccer Federation released a statement saying they’re currently unsure whether or not Davies will take part in the pair of matches. They also express that they’re in contact with Bayern reharding the matter.
The statement (via @iMiaSanMia):
Our Men’s National Team’s medical staff continues to be in close communication with FC Bayern München’s medical staff concerning Alphonso Davies. A determination on his availability for the upcoming March international window has not yet been made. In the coming weeks, we will announce the full team roster.
It’s all in perspective. For the Canadian national team and Davies, pride is always at play and he’ll want to play every match he can for his country, rightfully so. For Bayern, they’d be watching with nervous eyes if Davies plays a part in the friendlies at such a crucial stage of the season for the Bundesliga champions and losing him again to another long-term injury could prove to be costly.
