Manchester United Women advanced to the fifth round of the FA Cup on Sunday with a prolific performance from a rotated squad featuring several newcomers.
Striker Lea Schuller, a transfer from Bayern Munich, and Layla Drury, a 16 year old academy player, capped off a dominant 5-0 win over Burnley at the Progress with Unity Stadium yesterday.
It took only two minutes for United to get in front through captain Maya Le Tissier, and goals from Julia Zigiotti Olme and Simi Awujo rounded out the first half
nicely for the Reds.
United controlled the game from start to finish, allowing just one shot from the opposition in the entire contest.
Schuller, who made her first start for the Reds, came on for the final half hour in a 0-0 draw against Arsenal last week as United returned to Women’s Super League action, but will be happy to have opened her account at United ahead of another matchup with the Gunners this week.
United and Arsenal will meet on Wednesday in the Women’s League Cup Semifinal, one of three real chances at silverware still on the table for United.
The schedule really starts to get rolling again after that, with league matches against Aston Villa, Liverpool and Leicester City presenting a great opportunity to put points on the board before Champions League play starts again with a knockout fixture against Atletico Madrid. United are currently in fifth on 22 points, one point back from Arsenal in third and 11 points off of league leaders City.
