Volleyball
The VolleyCats had a great weekend in Chapel Hill, NC, as the took down the Top 25-ranked host Tarheels in 5 sets on Friday, and then followed it up by taking the UNC Tournament crown by beating East Carolina on Saturday in five sets to move to 7-1 on the season. Including a 3-0 sweep of NC State earlier this season, the Wildcats are now 3-0 against schools from the Tarheel State in 2025.
Despite the victorious weekend, the Cats weren’t able to supplant UNC in the AVCA Top 25 poll this week, coming
in unofficially at 31 this week.
The Wildcats now turn their attention to Big 12 play, and open the conference slate on Friday welcoming in Arizona to Morgan Family Arena, followed by #8 Arizona State on Sunday. Friday’s 6:30pm and Sunday’s 2:00pm contests will both be available on ESPN+.
Golf
The men’s golf squad has opened the season strong, winning their home invitational a couple weeks ago before finishing 5th out of 14 teams at The Wohali in Utah last week. This week they are up in Lincoln, NE, and were sitting in second behind host Nebraska after one day. The Cats position at 7-under is entirely due to senior Alex Lindstrom’s incredible first-round score of 8-under 63, which ties for the second-best round in school history — one stroke shy of the school record that’s been on the books since 1948. Lindstrom enters day two atop the individual leaderboard at 10-under, with a two-stroke advantage over second place. Rain is likely to become a factor later in the day.
Soccer
It may not seem like a big deal, but the SoccerCats opened Big 12 play with a 0-0 draw with Colorado in Boulder last Thursday night. And really, it’s not a big deal — it’s a huge deal because the Cats snapped a 5-game conference losing streak and shut down a Buffs squad that came into the match leading the conference in goals scored. Senior keeper Maddie Sibbing added to her impressive start to the 2025 season, notching five saves for her second-highest effort this season, pushing her to 25 saves through eight games.
Women’s Basketball
After waiting what feels like an eternity, we finally have a Big 12 schedule for the women, which means in late September we finally have a full basketball schedule released (men’s schedule *still* hasn’t been released, which seems insane). Times are still TBA, but at least dates are all in place for the 2025-26 season.
The new-look Cats open Big 12 play with a road trip to Ft. Worth to face TCU on December 20th before taking nearly two weeks off for Christmas break and a return to action in Manhattan against Cincinnati on Dec. 31st. It’s also a back-loaded schedule, as the Cats will face Iowa State twice, KU, and Baylor in their final five regular season games.
The Cats open the 2025 season in just over a month, facing Tarleton State in exhibition — a rare departure from playing the Kansas D2 schools — on Oct. 27th before getting the counted games kicked off on Nov. 3rd against Omaha in Manhattan.
Football
As best I can tell, the football team didn’t lose to BYE, which about the best thing I can say about them right now. We’ll have some more content as Saturday’s 11am contest with UCF gets closer. But don’t expect sunshine and flowers…..
