It initially felt like Kevin Owens and CM Punk didn’t even want to do another match against each other but WWE did the work to set up a No Holds Barred main event for Friday Night SmackDown
this week. Owens showed up on NXT this week to cost Punk his NXT championship match against Grayson Waller, and has continued to make it clear his goal is to get Chicago’s favorite son out of the company altogether.A match like this would seem to give him the opportunity to do just that. If nothing else, they
sure made it feel like this would be a definitive match between the two, a way for them to settle the score and move on after, no matter the outcome.
They fought with the kind of passion you’d expect from these two in this match type, including Owens hitting Punk in the heard with a trash can, and then putting it over his head and blasting it with a chair. Punk got back at him by hitting a back body drop on that same trash can, splitting it open. It got pretty brutal at points!
They did back-to-back insane bumps, with Owens getting dumped from the top rope through a row of chairs facing each other followed up by KO suplexing Punk through multiple tables set up outside the ring. They finally got a “this is awesome” chant after that one.
The finish: Owens wrapped a steel chain around his hand and screamed “DIE, YOU PIECE OF SHIT” at Punk before loading up for his biggest punch. Punk somehow countered by ducking under and hitting the GTS, but Owens bounced off the ropes and threw a haymaker that landed flush.
That got the three count.
This match absolutely ruled.
