The two teams in the middle of the WPBL standings face off against one another for a final time in the regular season. As things stand heading into tonight’s contest between the New York Heights (6-7) and the Los Angeles Queens (7-6), the season series between the two teams is tied at two wins apiece.
The result of tonights game has implications beyond the season series between these two teams. The postseason is right around the corner as they begin on Wednesday September 9th. All four teams will be a part of the postseason field but where each team will fit into the bracket depends on their regular season record.
The number one seed was clinched last night by the San Francisco Firebells but the second seed is still up for grabs between the Queens and Heights.
If the Queens are able to take the win tonight they will have guaranteed themselves the number two seed.
If the Heights were to win tonight they would still need to either win their final game (tomorrow against the Firebells) or have the Queens lose their own final game (Saturday against the Boston Hunters) in order to secure the second seed.
The most upheaval in the playoff picture possible at this point would occur if the Heights lose both of their remaining games and the Hunters win both of their remaining two games. If that were to happen the Heights would have the unenviable challenge of needing to face off against the powerful Firebells in a three game series in the semifinals of the playoffs.
If you needed any other reason to be excited about tonight’s game here’s one more: it’s Pride Night!
