Yesterday, Czechia scored first against South Africa, but were only able to manage a 1-1 draw after giving up a penalty that was scored in the 83rd minute by Teboho Mokoena. Switzerland struggled to score against Bosnia and Herzegovina, and the score was 0-0 into the 74th minute, when Switzerland opened the scoring with Manzambi, and the floodgates opened, with two more Swiss goals, a Bosnia reply, and a Xhaka penalty to finish at 4-1 Switzerland.
Canada jumped on top of Qatar early and never looked
back, scoring twice in the first 30 minutes, drawing a red card on Qatar for a challenge that was deemed to be just outside the box, and scoring again on 10-man Qatar to make it 3-0 at halftime. The only thing that could dampen Canadian spirits was when Assim Madibo went in for a bad challenge on Ismaël Koné. You always hate to speculate, but it seems likely that Koné has a broken leg or another very serious injury; he had to be carted off. Madibo received Qatar’s second red card, and Canada poured on 3 more goals in the second half to finish 6-0 winners.
In the late game, South Korea held Mexico to 0-0 through halftime, when Mexico was booed off the field by their home fans. In the 50th minute, South Korean ‘keeper Seung-Gyu Kim made an awful mistake, coming to claim a cross but letting it slip from his hands, for a grateful Luis Romo to tap it in. That goal completely changed the dynamic of the game. South Korea struggled to create chances for an equalizer, but when they did, Mexican ‘keeper Raúl Rangel made a fantastic double-save that will likely live on in Mexican memory for years. Mexico finished 1-0 winners, clinching first place in Group A, and meaning that they will continue playing their games in Mexico for the beginning of the knockout stage.
Today, we go to the second round of games in Groups C and D. The USA meets Australia in the opener, with a chance to decide who will top the group. Scotland faces Morocco in the next match. Scotland gutted out a 1-0 win over Haiti in their opener, but Morocco seem like the clear favorites after outplaying Brazil and drawing them 1-1. Brazil meets Haiti next, and with respect to Haiti, this could be the “get right” game that Brazil needs right now. Türkiye and Paraguay meet in the late match, both smarting from opening match defeats. If Türkiye want to turn things around and do something in this tournament, it could start with a win here.
So, what will the games have in store for us today? Stick around, drop your comments, and have a great time.
