Rutgers Athletics has posted a job opening for a basketball general manager to oversee NIL and brand management for both the men’s and women’s basketball teams. According to the post, this position will report directly to the head coaches of both teams.
One of the main questions for the off-season of Rutgers basketball is what the athletic department is going to do to get a handle on both teams’ revenue and NIL situation. Many Scarlet Knight fans and analysts were calling for a GM to be hired to help
men’s basketball coach Steve Pikiell and women’s basketball coach Coquese Washington fundraise for their programs and manage their cash flow. Now it seems that they are one step closer to their wish.
Rutgers posted the full listing on their employment opportunities website, which can be found here. According to the listing, the GM will manage all aspects of the recruiting process, serving as the primary point of contact for Name, Image, and Likeness (NIL) opportunities within NCAA guidelines, and creating innovative recruiting communications through social media, print, and video platforms. The GM will also serve as a strategic and operational partner for the Rutgers basketball programs, as well as manage player programs, support fundraising efforts, and strengthen the programs’ relationship with donors, alumni, and community stakeholders.
Some other responsibilities the job will have include supporting recruiting, NIL/brand management, program development, and stakeholder engagement, combining competitive intelligence, athlete brand building, donor cultivation, community relations, and partnership management to sustain Rutgers’ standing as a premier basketball program. They will also serve as a liaison with NIL collectives, while overseeing transfer portal evaluations and establishing/maintaining relationships with recruits, current student-athletes, alumni, and professional players, according to the listing.
The salary range posted on the listing is $150,000- $300,000, depending on the candidate’s qualifications, experience, and expertise, as well as the availability of department or grant funds to support the position. Rutgers also offers a comprehensive benefits package.
Rutgers basketball has faced several NIL-related issues in recent memory, including not having the necessary funds to acquire team needs in the transfer portal or keep talented players already on their roster from leaving. Rutgers’ new AD Keli Zinn appears to have a plan to change that.
