On Monday, Uruguayan journalists began to talk up a return to Liverpool for Darwin Nuñez, with the 26-year-old striker having agreed a contract termination with Al Hilal just a year after signing with the Saudi side in a £46M deal and seeking a return to Europe.
While Nuñez’ time on Merseyside didn’t go quite to plan, the striker remains a fan favourite and has an enviable physical toolkit. Meanwhile, Liverpool look shockingly light in attack and have a worrying amount of transfer business to do this
summer as a result.
Put it together and a return, particularly on a free transfer, did seem to be plausible. However, reports from the Liverpool end were quick to pour cold water on the story—and they have now been followed up by reports from the player’s camp doing the same.
Early denials in interest in re-signing Nuñez via The Athletic could have been written off as the club trying to keep things quiet, but those have been followed up by reports from transfer rumour spammer Fabrizio Romano and The Echo citing Nuñez’ reps.
While it’s often the case in transfers that local reports are most reliable and it’s impossible to entirely dismiss Uruguayan talk of a reunion, if it is a possibility it seems everyone wants it kept quiet—and perhaps what’s likelier is it simply isn’t in the works.
