Bayern Munich sporting director Christoph Freund is happy that Hiroki Itō was able to make his return to the squad toward the end of the first half of the season and is expecting the former VfB Stuttgart defender to have a big impact in the second half.
“It’s been unfortunate for him and everyone involved so far. He can do what he loves most again: play football. He’s really fit. We’ve been careful throughout the whole process. It happened three times. We’re convinced that this is now over. With the way
he plays, he’ll help the team. He’s left-footed, a center-back, and can also play on the left. He’s a really good footballer, and we’re happy for him that he’s back. He’ll be an important pillar for us in the coming months,” Freund told Sky Germany’s Florian Plettenberg (as captured by @iMiaSanMia).
Itō’s ability to play both as a center-back and left-back give head coach Vincent Kompany great flexibility and also the confidence that the squad has solid depth on the backline. If he can stay healthy, this should make Bayern Munich even more of a problem for the opposition.
