Match Preview
Everton are back to league action in tonight’s Monday night game against a very familiar opponent in Newcastle United. The Blues dumped the Magpies out of the Carabao Cup on Thursday night, with the game ending on a bad-tempered note and fisticuffs are likely to be on the cards tonight at St. James’ Park too.
The Toffees have some internal issues to deal with after Jack Grealish being suspended internally following a disciplinary issue, and he will be out for this game as well having missed the last
game at Hill Dickinson Stadium too. Jarrad Branthwaite has been on concussion protocol following his collision with Emiliano Martinez in the defeat against Chelsea, but has resumed training.
David Moyes has come under increased scrutiny in recent weeks as Everton have frittered away a positive start to the season. After picking up two wins and three draws in their first five games of the campaign to sit as high as fifth, the Toffees are coming off two straight 2-0 defeats and have slipped down to 14th place. That said, the compacted nature of the table means a win tonight will see them leapfrog the Toon and go into 7th.

The Blues just beat Newcastle in the Carabao Cup having sped to a 3-0 lead in the second half before the visitors pulled one back late in the game. Everton won on their last trip to St. James’ Park as well, winning 3-2 in the game remembered best for Jordan Pickford’s remarkable save on a Sandro Tonali screamer late on to preserve the victory behind goals from Jarrad Branthwaite, Beto and Thierno Barry.
