It took until deadline day to get the difficult deal done, but Liverpool have completed their dream attacking signing today, with the Reds officially securing 25-year-old Swedish superstar striker Alexander Isak from Newcastle for a British record £125M transfer fee. Talk about a statement of intent.
Isak’s signing puts a bow on what has been a stunning summer transfer window for Liverpool, with sporting
director Richard Hughes looking to equip manager Arne Slot for a Premier League title defence and to push deeper in the Champions League in his second year in charge of England’s most successful football club.
“I feel amazing,” Isak said in his first interview for his new club. “It’s been a long journey to get here, but I’m super-happy to be a part of this team, this club, and everything it stands for. It’s something I’m proud of and I’m really looking forward to it. I’m just happy it’s done and that I can get back to work.
“I’m looking forward to seeing my teammates and the fans and getting back out there. I think I have a lot to give, I think I have a lot to improve. I’m a striker but I always want to give as much as possible to the team, mainly goals but much more than that as well. I want to win everything, yeah. I want to create history.”
Isak was the Premier League’s top striker last season and securing his signature was never going to be an easy task, but in the end the Reds get their man—and Isak, who has been a favourite of Liverpool’s recruitment team going back a decade, gets a chance to shine on the biggest stage and compete for football’s top trophies.
“What the club is building, what they’re building on top of what the club already is, the history of the club,” Isak added. “Getting the chance to be a part of this, I want to win trophies. That’s the biggest motivation for me and I feel like this is the perfect place for me to grow even further and to take my game to the next level.
“I feel like this is the next step for me in my career. I’m super-happy that I’ve been given this chance and I’m very motivated to do something well with it.”
