By now, you’re well aware that the San Francisco 49ers are operating a new scheme under Raheem Morris. It seems like there’s a daily question for one of the offensive players or staff about the difference in Morris’s defense.
On Thursday, Morris admitted that he’s “making up a lot of terms” since he’s been with the 49ers. One of those terms is “fever backer.” Here’s what that position is, according to Morris:
Obviously, you know what traditional backers look like. Stand-up guys that can move around.
Those fever backers are kind of those guys that bring you subtle changes, subtle different things. They can do different things. They can play star for you. They can play outside edge and play sort of a big nickel. They can get at the line of scrimmage. They can use their hands, do a couple different things. We’ve got a couple different terms for what those styles look like and what they feel like in order to get guys lined up, put them on paper.
Nick Martin. Jaden Dugger. Larry Worth. Those are the three players to keep an eye on in these roles. Those are the players who can rush the passer, play underneath coverage, and set the edge in the running game.
Morris also referenced the term “spinner,” which is something Pete Carroll did with the Seahawks when they had a bunch of pass rushers early in the LOB days. Their “spinner” was mainly Bruce Irvin. To me, that’s who I envision the 49ers think Romello Height will be.
More recently, that was Jalon Walker for the Falcons last season. A spinner is an edge rusher in name, but the defensive lineman who will move around the line of scrimmage. The uber-athlete who will line up everywhere, whether it’s over the left guard, right tackle, or blitzing from the stacked linebacker spot.
Morris mentioned spinner a few times on Thursday, including when talking about Height:
Obviously, on tape you saw the designated pass rusher role that you can feel that we lost from the team from the year before. So, he can come in and feel some of those things. Then there was some further thoughts, some things that we could possibly do with him, whether it be fever backer, whether it be spinner, whatever it is, being able to get him out of different roles. Then you’ve got to meet the young man to find out what his learning capacity is. Can he handle those things from a down-in, down-out basis? And he’s done a really nice job of handling those things throughout the course of training camp. That’s all you really can say.
The 49ers won’t be nearly as static as they’ve been if they are anything like the Falcons from a season ago. There are several benefits to late movement or crowding the line of scrimmage with different body types.
You can manipulate protections, create confusion, and get the offensive line to set or slide the wrong way. It’s a way to create free runners. It also gives the defense a way to tee off on the running back in 1-on-1 situations. Occasionally, we’ll see Height drop into coverage, but if his usage is anything like Walker’s last season, he’ll be one of the key pieces to the 49ers’ defense in 2026.
