According to a report from Matt Zenitz of CBS Sports, the Detroit Lions are “expected to hire” Wolverines assistant director of personnel John Collins as a scouting assistant.
Collins is a quick up-and-comer throughout the personnel ranks. Collins was a recruiting assistant for Temple for five months before a quick stint as a player personnel intern for the Pittsburgh Steelers.
From there, he parlayed that experience to earn the recruiting and personnel assistant job with the Georgia Bulldogs in 2022
under Kirby Smart. He was part of the team there that helped Georgia earn the No. 1 rated recruiting class in 2024.
Michigan hired him away in 2024, and he’s been credited with a couple of decent recruiting classes with the Wolverines. From our friends at Maize N Brew:
Collins had been an important part of the Michigan recruiting department for the last two seasons, joining the program ahead of the 2024 season, Sherrone Moore’s first year as head coach. With Collins on staff, Michigan was able to assemble its highly-rated 2025 recruiting class, which featured five-star prospects Bryce Underwood and Andrew Babalola, along with other promising young players Andrew Marsh, Jordan Young, Shamari Earls, and Nate Marshall.
Per 247 Sports, the Wolverines’ recruiting classes ranked sixth in 2025 and and 12th in 2026.
The hiring has not yet been made official by the Lions. Last year, they made several updates to their front office around this point in the offseason. So don’t be surprised if the team announces a few more changes to the personnel departments soon.
