Dear Roker Report,
A nine-hour-plus round trip to Brentford and back after losing 3-0 wasn’t in my script, but I’m not going to be critical of the Lads.
Since 20 December, we’ve played five league games, which included long trips to Brighton, Spurs and Brentford — a lot of miles over festive period.
We’ve mainly used the same players and once we missed the penalty, our heads visibly dropped. Enzo Le Fée was trying to be cheeky and hit the target, but the goalkeeper called his bluff.
If it goes, in we all cheer and I’m
sure the manager will have a word with him, but let’s draw a line through it.
The FA Cup is next up, so we could rest a few ready for the Crystal Palace game and with some AFCON players due back soon, the squad will reboot and bounce back.
Haway the lads!
Mark
Ed’s Note [Phil]: Hi, Mark. Thank you for your letter.
After the disappointment of Brentford, it was great to see the Lads get back to winning ways at Everton — with a very strong team and solid, lively away display really catching my eye on Saturday. Enzo Le Fée was also at the heart of the action and he responded superbly after his midweek mistake.
As you rightly say, we’ve had a very heavy schedule of league games recently, so let’s hope that we can recharge and get ready for Crystal Palace on the back of our FA Cup victory — and it’s also true that the players who are returning from AFCON will make a huge difference!

Dear Roker Report,
It’s about time that Florent Ghisolfi and Kristjaan Speakman got their heads together and signed a reputable goal scorer — which is what we’ve desperately needed for as long as I can remember.
Come on: heads together and get what we need.
Ian Frame
Ed’s Note [Phil]: Hi, Ian. Thank you for getting in touch.
As good as it would be to add this mythical “proven goalscorer” to the ranks, I suppose the bigger question is “Where do we find one — and how much would it cost?”
It’s perfectly fair to say that goals have been hard to come by recently, but we all know that the January market is often a story of extortionate fees and hit-and-miss recruitment, so I’ve got a feeling that the club may decide to stick with what we’ve already got and attempt to supply a better standard of service to the likes of Brian Brobbey and Wilson Isidor.
Then again, I could be wrong and they might surprise us again!
