Happy Sox Sunday, White Sox fans! It’s been a great season of Sunday coverage, and today we approach Game 162. For some teams, Game 162 means more, but for us, it means the end of a long, up-and-down season. The goal today is for the team to pick up their 60th win, which seems like a very low standard, but when you look at the progress from last year to this year it puts it more into perspective. Ending the season in the 60-win mark looks a lot better than 59, and they can do that at Nationals Park
this afternoon.
Before we get into the matchups, we had a pop-up surprise retirement announcement two hours prior to game time by Michael A. Taylor. He has been a solid pickup and veteran presence this season, and had a successful 10-year career. The 34-year-old has played on the Nationals, Kansas City Royals, Minnesota Twins and Pittsburgh Pirates. He was selected by the Nationals in the 2009 MLB draft, so it’s only fitting to play the last game of his career at Nationals Park, as he spent most of his career there, including winning a World Series with the team in 2019.
Now, onto the game today. Shane Smith, the All-Star starter for the South Siders, will close the season on the mound this afternoon. Smith is 6-8 with a 3.98 ERA and 1.24 WHIP. His last outing against the New York Yankees was five innings with five hits, one run, four walks, and eight strikeouts. His outings later on in the season have been short, but nonetheless a solid overall season as he looks to be the next ace of this starting rotation.
Brad Lord will get the start for the Nats, who is 5-9 with a 4.12 ERA and 1.28 WHIP. Lord was a 2022 draft pick by the Nationals, who made his debut this season. He has been average in 2025, and looks to end his rookie season on a good note with a win. His last outing against the Atlanta Braves was solid, as he went six innings with four hits, two runs, one walk, and four strikeouts.
Game time is at 2:05 p.m. CT. Game is on CHSN and WGN-AM 720.
